The art of storytelling for creating human connection in action...

Last weekend, my family and I visited the Art Gallery of NSW to see the Archibald (and Young Archibald) Exhibition; a vibrant sea of colourful, photo-like portraits, each with their own story to tell.
Storytelling is also an art, as they say; but instead of using a paintbrush to paint a picture, storytellers use words to bring a blank canvas to life.
We did just that as part of the interactive Happy Birthday 2U2 installation by Hikoko Ito – a Japanese artist and architect – who constructed 366 mailboxes: one for every birthday month, as part of the community-driven card exchange initiative.
It was sheer delight to search for your mailbox and receive a handmade card by someone who shares your birthday, but whom you’ve never met! And then returning the favour by crafting your own card to be found by the next visitor – your birthday twin!
In a world full of virtual messages that often feel remote, it’s a universal celebration of happiness in making connections.
